Overcoming my GAS

A couple of days ago something intriguing occurred to me: I seem to have grown out of GAS (Gear Acquisition Syndrome). I’ve been effectively saving all my income since the start of the year, and despite receiving my annual bonus, resisted the urge to splurge on a new camera or lens.

That is not to say that I haven’t been thinking about getting some sweet new equipment.. Lately the medium format Fuji GFX 50Sii has been on my mind. For portraiture work this would be quite an upgrade from my current EOS RP for portraiture work given its larger sensor:

(1) It would be an upgrade from 26MP to 50MP.

(2) The physically larger sensor (43.8 x 32.9mm vs 36x24mm) would noticeably improve the dynamic range and therefore the tones in the images

The larger sensor would overall produce cleaner and more detailed images (until I put grain all over them anyways..).

Since none of my current lenses would fit this camera, I’d need to get a lens as well. While the body can be found 2nd hand for $2,500 (about half the original price), lenses are tough to get a deal on. So a 3rd party like the Mitakon Zhongyi Speedmaster 65mm f/1.4 would be my choice at around $800.

I have been thinking about why, despite finally being able to afford an upgrade like this, I’m holding off on it. I feel motivated to relocate to Korea in 2023 and see what the future there holds for me.
